Mindless Habits That Could Be Making Us More Irritable

 March 5, 2023

Sometimes, you do things without even realizing that you’re doing them. These are called mindless habits, and they’re a lot more common than you might think. We typically use them to help us cope when dealing with negative emotions, but sometimes, they do more harm than good. It’s worth knowing when this is the case so you can try and stop yourself every time you engage in one of these habits.

Not seeing enough sunlight

It’s become incredibly easy for people to never leave their homes. With so many delivery options at our fingertips, it can be tempting to stay locked inside and away from the world. Sadly, it might be problematic and is something that could be causing you significant irritation. To fix this, it’s worth leaving the house at least once a day, ideally for a short walk. If you do this first thing in the morning, you’ll get your dose of natural light and should feel ready to tackle the day ahead.

Checking your phone too often

Most people check their cell phones a lot throughout the day, and that’s not always a good thing. Every time you get a notification and look, you risk distracting yourself from your other tasks. That’s not ideal during the workday, which is why you should probably keep the device in a different room when possible. Otherwise, it might continually affect your time management, which could then lead to stress and irritability.

Reading too much negativity

Speaking of cell phones, you should probably think twice about what you look at on them too. There’s so much negativity out there nowadays, particularly on social media, that it can do a number on your brain. This doomscrolling can be emotionally draining and cause significant irritability, which is another reason why reducing your screen time can be a huge bonus.

Not eating when hungry

It’s usually no fun being hungry. Without food in your system to keep your energy levels up, you can become tired, sluggish, and irritable. Those, combined with an inability to concentrate fully, can make it difficult to get through the day. The obvious solution here is to eat something when your stomach starts rumbling. However, people often don’t listen to their bodies, preferring to hold off on food for one reason or another. That only makes things worse.
