Art Nouveau ([aʁ nu vo], anglicised /ˈɑːt nuːvəu/) (French for 'new art') is an international style of art, architecture and design that peaked in popularity at the beginning of the 20th century (1880-1914) and is characterised by highly-stylised, flowing, curvilinear designs often incorporating floral and other plant-inspired motifs.

The name 'Art Nouveau' derived from the name of a shop[1] in Paris, Maison de l'Art Nouveau, at the time run by Siegfried Bing, that showcased objects that followed this approach to design.

Art Nouveau was a movement that greatly influenced artists and designers and later progressed onto the De Stijl movement (from 1880-1905) and the German Bauhaus school (early 1920's-1930's). Unlike other styles of design, art nouveau was broad based enough to encompass a whole lifestyle: It was possible to live in an art nouveau house with art nouveau furniture, silverware, crockery, etc.

The style introduced by Bing was not an immediate success in Paris but rapidly spread to Nancy and to Belgium (especially Brussels) where Victor Horta and Henry Van de Velde would make major contributions in the field of architecture and design. In the United Kingdom Art Nouveau developed out of the Arts and Crafts Movement. The most important centre in Britain was Glasgow with the creations of Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

More localised terms for the phenomenon of self-consciously radical, somewhat reformist mannered chic that formed a prelude to 20th-century modernism include Jugendstil in Germany, Austria and many other countries, named after the avant-garde periodical Jugend ('Youth'), Młoda Polska ('Young Poland' style) in Poland, or skønvirke in Denmark, and Sezessionsstil ('Secessionism') in Vienna, where forward-looking artists and designers seceded from the mainstream salon exhibitions to exhibit on their own work in more congenial surroundings.

In Spain, the movement was centred in Barcelona and was known as modernisme, with the architect Antoni Gaudí as the most noteworthy practitioner. Art Nouveau was also a force in Central and Eastern Europe, with the influence of Alfons Mucha in Prague and Moravia (part of the modern Czech Republic) and Latvian Romanticism (Riga, the capital of Latvia, is home to over 800 Art Nouveau buildings).

In Russia, the movement revolved around the art magazine Mir iskusstva ('World of Art'), which spawned the revolutionary Ballets Russes. In Italy, Stile Liberty was named for the London shop, Liberty & Co, which distributed modern design emanating from the Arts and Crafts movement, a sign both of the Art Nouveau's commercial aspect and the 'imported' character that it always retained in Italy.

MEDITATION

Stage 1: Relaxation

When we sit for meditation, we must give up our concept of self, our egotism. We must close our eyes without tension, keeping our neck and back straight, and unstraining every detail of our body without being but not neither too loose nor too tense. The position of our hands, legs and body is not so important as long as we are sitting straight without an any stress.

Stage 2: Developing Concentration

We should do nothing with our mind. We should not think about the past nor plan for the future. We keep our mind from doing anything at present. By doing so, there comes an awareness of what is really there-- awareness of the nature of mind and matter (Impermanent Paramattha). In this technique, five ways of perceiving Impermanent Paramattha are recommended for focusing awareness: touch of in-breath and out-breath at the tip of the nose, vibration of the heart-beat, knowing in the forehead, hearing of sound (especially while receiving Dhamma instructions) and the rising and falling movement of the abdomen.

When we are new to this technique, we should try each of these five ways until we find out which one suit us best. Just five to ten minutes in each meditation period is enough to develop concentration until we become accustomed to one technique. Once we get used to the technique, our mindfulness will automatically be established in the way we have chosen. Then, establishing concentration for five to ten minutes is not required anymore. At this stage, we may recognize the appearing and disappearing nature which is common in touch, awareness, vibration, hearing, etc., but we MUST not name or label them; we must let go of all labels.

Stage 3: Mental Noting: The link between concentration and wisdom

In the next step, continual mental noting of "nothing" becomes the most important. The illusion of something is always related to death; so is nothing to deathless. In order to destroy the illusion of 'I', we use mental noting of nothing since it involves the least possible amount of 'I'.

This is the stage of developing concentration led by faith in Dhamma and Dhamma instructor. At this stage, we do not accept even the existence of impermanent Â Paramattha. The ultimate cause of suffering is lack of insight into the unchanging truth of impermanence. Whatever Paramattha appears to us, it is because of our own acceptance of its existence. Cause and Effect. As long as we do not accept the existence of anything, there will be no Cause and Effect; so that nothing can appear. When Impermanent Paramattha [H1] appears, we do not accept it as being something, rather we should only accept it as being nothing, nothing, nothing, because the ultimate nature of Impermanent Paramattha is nothing but emptiness.

It is prove difficult for an untrained mind to practice the mental noting of 'nothing' because we are so accustomed to conceptualization. So we may know Paramattha as something. We must not allow our mind to identify Paramattha as something, like we are so used to. When this happens, we will have to mentally note "Nothing, Nothing, Nothing". Then we will realize that there will really be nothing. Even if we find our mind uncontrollable while meditating, we must not give up mental noting, instead try harder until we have overcome it. It is very important to understand that the aim of this technique is to achieve not mere calmness and peace of mind but enlightenment. Do it persistently until we experience the existence of emptiness of objects for the first time; and we must keep on knowing the emptiness as it appears anew in every moment. Knowing the existence of emptiness is knowing the Natural truth.

Stage 4: Realizing the Emptiness of whatever appears

Once we know emptiness which is ever-new, it is no longer necessary to note mentally on objects as nothing. Instead, we should keep on knowing the emptiness of objects as the leading role. In this way, we will come to know real emptiness. When we come to know the real emptiness, we must keep on trying to sustain the ever-new knowing of the ever-new emptiness. When we lost the knowing of emptiness and regain the knowing of something, even thoughts of past emptiness, we must overcome it with the knowing of nothing repeatedly until we have found the ever-new emptiness. If the knowing of emptiness of objects occurs uninterruptedly, there will come a stage where there is nothing to know. At this point, we may not know what to do and we could be confused and or even think that "I have attained Enlightenment or Nirvana.' In that stage, mentally note again on knowing of nothing as nothing, nothing, nothing.

Stage 5: Realizing the Emptiness of 'I'

By constant and continuous (continual) mental noting in such way, there comes a stage of realizing that there is emptiness even in the knowing of emptiness or non-existence of the subject. In other words, there is only ever-new knowing of emptiness, without the knower and the known. Through the continuous knowing of nothing, we will realize the truth that everything, whether living or non-living, is also of the nature of nothing (no I, no you, no human, no living being). In reality, everything we know is absolutely nothing at all. As a result of continued knowing of emptiness for a length of time, more or less 15 minutes, (this can vary with individual) there will be a stage in meditation where there comes feeling of disgust. At this stage, it is very important to overcome this feeling of disgust by sticking to the knowing of nothing until the knowing of emptiness is restored. The knowing of nothing should be sustained like a robot or a broken record. To arrive at uninterrupted knowing of the existence of emptiness for more or less 15 minutes, it may take 7 days, or 7 months or even 7 years depending on individual capability and exertion.

PENETRATION OF THE TRUTH (Going Beyond Impermanent Emptiness)

Only by full understanding of the existence of ever new impermanence or emptiness in every sensation, (and) with complete disenchantment and fully letting go of it, there comes the knowing of the existence of Permanence (liberation from non-Enlightenment, from attachment, and from the continuous cycle of appearance and disappearance which is impermanent Paramattha). In other words, without concern for anything else and sticking fast to the practice, it will naturally and surely lead to Enlightenment where Nirvana can directly be experienced. This Nirvana is permanent by its very own nature and is the gift of Nature that no one or nothing can destroy.

Accordingly, the first layer of non-enlightenment will disappear and there appears a special wisdom called Magga, realizing Nirvana (or the Permanent Paramattha) for the first time throughout Samsara. Consequently, partial enlightenment that knows directly what is real, what is unreal, what is right and what is wrong, and the relationship of cause and effect in nature appears and is sustained perpetually.

EXTENDING THE PRACTICE INTO DAILY LIFE

Knowing something is not important, rather knowing of nothing to know is really important. Knowing nothing of whatever we do is the key to wisdom or full enlightenment. What you are doing such as eating, walking, meditation, talking, etc, are not important. Only the knowing of everything is nothing is truly important.

Do not think about the past, do not hope for the future and do not think about future. Just do what we have to do with just one present mind, but do not record or impress on what we are doing. By doing like this, we can develop skill in whatever you do in daily life. And also, by doing everything with the knowing of nothing (Just like you only aim your camera at the objects as if you are going to take pictures but do not record or press on the button) we will find ourselves eat only what is necessary, sleep only what is necessary, say only what is necessary, do only what is necessary, go only where and when necessary. This will lead us to know the suffering of sensation. e.g., eating, sleeping, talking, doing, and going. Being attached to such kind of sufferings as pleasure is the cause of suffering. This right knowing of suffering as suffering will lead us to the non-attachment or total liberation from all the sufferings. When the mind becomes totally liberated, there will be no attachment in eating and not eating, sleeping and not sleeping, speaking and not speaking, doing and not doing, going and not going.

The only real liberation or freedom is not liberation from danger, not liberation from prison, not liberation from poverty, only liberation from continuous cycle of appearing and disappearing of immaterial. Danger, prison, poverty, etc., are just names and they are unrealistic.

HOLY BLOOD PROCESSION - BRUGES, 17 MAY 2007

Annually since the year 1150, the historic city of Bruges has been attracting thousands of visitors to one of the great religious pageants in Europe, the Holy Blood Procession. For eight centuries the relic has been venerated by a mile-long procession of 1,500 Bruges citizens, many in the colorful medieval garb of Crusader or knight. The relic of the Holy Blood was brought to Bruges by Thierry d'Alsace, Count of Flanders in 1149, presumably given to him by the Patriarch of Jerusalem in recognition of his contribution to the First Crusade in the Holy Land.

The procession during which the relic is paraded through the town for veneration dates to 1303. Except for being in hiding during the two World Wars it has never left Bruges and is kept in the Basilica of St. Basil in the Burg Square.

There are two parts to the procession : the first by tableaux and floats enacts scenes from the Bible up through the coming of Christ and His Resurrection. The second part depicts the return of the Count of Flanders to Bruges.

B A G E T S

Back in 1990, when my brother, Manong Oscar, was the secretary of the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC), I also introduced myself as the Secretary of Transformation and Communion!

Come to think of it, the whole Lenten Season is simply the call toward real conversion and transformation of one’s heart and character, and, toward a deeper, more personal communion with God and others, especially the less fortunate in our midst. It’s the time to be renewed and vibrant, to be BAGETS (not bakets - Ilocano word for old woman) in our spiritual life once again.

So, let’s go B - A - G - E - T - S for Lent!

B – Balik Panginoon (Back to God)

Let us bring back God into our hearts by making a good confession. When was the last time you really humbled yourself and asked to be forgiven by your God? Right away, the evil one will tell you that you have no real sins (denial), that it’s really not that bad so there’s no need to go to confession (rationalization) and that you go to confession “tsaka na lang" (postponement).

A – Alis Galit (Away with anger)

Look into your heart and dispose all the useless junk you’ve been carrying in your heart all these years. You are not obliged to be miserable in this life! Forgive and you are free. Continue to be angry and resentful and you are miserable. You have been forgiven much. Be grateful. Be forgiving. End your private wars and battles. In the end, nobody wins if nobody forgives. Forget your favorite refrain that says "Me and me against the world." And stop being calculating and exacting in your relationships. Dapat give na give ka, huwag lang one-give, two gives, three gives!

G – Gawa Mabuti (Go for good actions)

Share naman. You who have much in life, please help the many people suffering around. I raise again the question: How much money do you really need in this life to be happy? How much of that money you are accumulating and holding on so can you take along with you when you leave this world? Remember, to whom much is given, much is also required. Again, be reminded that the riches (time, talent, and treasure) that you give away are the only riches you bring with you to eternity. Use your money for your salvation, not for your condemnation.

E – Express Your Love

Slow down and take time for God and people, and also for yourself. A very good practice is to kneel down as soon as you wake up and before you sleep to express your adoration, contrition, thanksgiving, supplication (ACTS) to your God. Another doable and very renewing practice is to drop by a church just to spend some moments of quiet and prayer — the candle glow once more! On the human level, it is amazing how we can “starve" other people of our love. We give only the comfortable installment, as it were, with a plan to give the lump sum when the person is dead or dying already. When it comes to loving, regular daily shower is better than a long drought with a final big downpour. Little things mean a lot, and it takes very little to make our loved ones happy. A phone call. A smile. A pat on the back. A hug. Very doable. Just do it now.

T – Tanggal Bisyo (Take away vice)

Someone once told me that he had no temptations. Why? Because as soon as temptation comes, he’d give in right away! We must not give up fighting our vices and weaknesses. We must continue to try and avoid the occasions and persons that lead us to sin. It would be a good idea to chart once the stages and steps that led you to a particular sinful moment. Once you know that road, avoid it. That’s right: take the "road less traveled." It leads to peace. It leads to Heaven.

S – Smile

Whatever sacrifice or good deeds you do, do it with a smile. God loves a cheerful giver, and God blesses a generous grateful (not resentful) heart. Take away that "Good Friday look" from your face and that "far-away look" in your eyes.

S – Secret

If you want to experience real joy, do all of the above in secret.

Let it be something just between you and your God, and you’ll experience a joy which the world cannot give or take away. Come to think of it, maybe this is the reason I started this with a note about being a secretary — a reminder to keep our Lenten project of transformation and communion a secret.

2007 - THE YEAR OF THE PIG

In the Chinese horoscope, the Pig is Yin and is the twelfth sign in the astrological chart.

It represents individuals that are strong, warm, loving, sensual, honest and often rich who show off their love of luxury. IT'S TIME FOR A JOKE!

ALL BLUE

"I think I have a problem, Doc," says a patient. "One of my balls has turned blue."

The doctor examines the man briefly and concludes that the patient will die if he doesn't have his testicle removed.

"Are you crazy?!" bursts the patient. "How could I let you do such a thing to me!"

"You want to die?" asks the doctor rhetorically, at which point the patient has to agree to have his testicle removed.

Two weeks after the operation, the patient comes back. "Doc, I don't know how to say this, but the other ball has turned blue, too."

Again, the doctor tells him that if he wants to live, his other testicle must be cut off, too. Again, the man is very reluctant to the idea.

"Hey, you want to die?" asks the doctor, and the patient has to agree with the operation. After two weeks of being testicle-less, the patient returns to the doctor and says, "I think something is very wrong with me. My penis is now completely blue."

After briefly examining the patient, the doctor gives him the bad news: If he wants to live, his penis has to go. Of course, the patient does not want to hear about it.

"You want to die?" asks the doctor.

"But...how do I pee?"

"We'll install a plastic pipe, and there will be no problem." So the patient has his penis removed, and, a while after the operation, the unfortunate man enters the doctor's office again. He is very angry.

"Doctor, the plastic pipe turned blue!"

"What?"

"Can you tell me what the hell is happening??"

The doctor examines the patient more carefully and says, "Hmmm, I don't know. Could it be the jeans?"

HORRIBLE DEATHS

Three men were standing in line to get into heaven one day. Apparently it had been a pretty
busy day, though, so St. Peter had to tell the first one, "Heaven's getting pretty close to full today, and I've been asked to admit only people who have had particularly horrible deaths. So what's your story?"

The first man replies: "Well, for a while I've suspected my wife has been cheating on me, so today I came home early to try to catch her red-handed. As I came into my 25th floor apartment, I could tell something was wrong, but all my searching around didn't reveal where this other guy could have been hiding. Finally, I went out to the balcony, and sure enough, there was this man hanging off the railing, 25 floors above ground! By now I was really mad, so I started beating on him and kicking him, but wouldn't you know it, he wouldn't fall off. So finally I went back into my apartment and got a hammer and starting hammering on his fingers. Of course, he couldn't stand that for long, so he let go and fell-but even after 25 stories, he fell into the bushes, stunned but okay. I couldn't stand it anymore, so I ran into the kitchen, grabbed the
fridge, and threw it over the edge where it landed on him, killing him instantly. But all the stress and anger got to me, and I had a heart attack and died there on the balcony."

"That sounds like a pretty bad day to me," said Peter, and let the man in.

The second man comes up and Peter explains to him about heaven being full, and again asks for his story.

"It's been a very strange day. You see, I live on the 26th floor of my apartment building, and every morning I do my exercises out on my balcony. Well, this morning I must have slipped or something, because I fell over the edge. But I got lucky, and caught the railing of the balcony on the floor below me. I knew I couldn't hang on for very long, when suddenly this man burst out
onto the balcony. I thought for sure I was saved, when he started beating on me and kicking me. I held on the best I could until he ran into the apartment and grabbed a hammer and started pounding on my hands. Finally I just let go, but again I got lucky and fell into the bushes below, stunned but all right. Just when I was thinking I was going to be okay, this refrigerator comes falling out of the sky and crushes me instantly, and now I'm here."

Once again, Peter had to concede that that sounded like a pretty horrible death.

The third man came to the front of the line, and again the whole process was repeated. Peter explained that heaven was full and asked for his story.

"Picture this," says the third man, "I'm hiding naked inside a refrigerator..."

APPLES AND ORANGES

A young teenaged girl was a prostitute and, for obvious reasons, kept it a secret from her
grandma. One day, the police raided a brothel and arrested a group of prostitutes, including the young girl. The prostitutes were instructed to line up in a straight line on the sidewalk. Well, who should be walking in the neighborhood, but little old Grandma. The young girl was frantic.

Sure enough, Grandma noticed her young granddaughter and asked curiously, "What are you lining up for, dear?" Not willing to let grandma in on her little secret, the young girl told her that some people were passing out free oranges and that she was lining up for some.

"Mmm, sounds lovely," said Grandma. "I think I'll have some myself," she continued as she made her way to the back of the line. A police officer made his way down the line, questioning all of the prostitutes. When he got to Grandma, at the end of the line, he was bewildered. "But
you're so old... how do you do it?"

Grandma replied, "Oh, it's quite easy, sonny... I just remove my dentures and suck 'em dry!"

TWO OLD PENSIONERS

Two old pensioners are taking a trip down memory lane by going back to the place where they first met.

Sitting at a café, the little old man says, "Remember the first time I met you over 50 years ago? We left this cafe, went round the corner behind the gas works, and I gave you one from behind."

"Why, yes, I remember it well, dear," replies the little old lady with a grin.

"Well, for old time's sake, let's go there again. and I'll give you one from behind."

The two pensioners pay their bill and leave the cafe. A young man sitting next to them has overheard the conversation and smiles to himself, thinking it would be quite amusing to see two old pensioners at it. He gets up and follows them. Sure enough, he sees the two pensioners near the gas works. The little old lady pulls off her knickers and lifts up her dress.

The old man pulls down his pants and grabs the lady's hips, and the little old lady reaches for the fence. Well, what follows is 40 minutes of the most athletic sex the man has ever seen. The little old man is banging away at the little old woman at a pace that can only be described as phenomenal. Limbs are flying everywhere, the movement is a blur, and they do not stop for a singlesecond. Finally, they collapse and don't move for an hour.

Well, the man is stunned. Never in his life has he ever seen anything that equates to this -- not in the movies, not from his friends, not from his own experiences.

Reflecting on what he has just seen, he says to himself, "I have to know his secret. If only I could shag like that now, let alone in 50 years' time!"

The two old pensioners have by this time recovered and dressed themselves. Plucking up courage, the man approaches the pensioner.

He says, "Sir, in all my life I have never seen anybody shag like that, particularly at your age. What's your secret? Could you shag like that 50 years ago?"

The pensioner replies, "Son, 50 years ago, that fucking fence wasn't electrified."

VIRGO. This is a period when balance can be restored; when life can get back onto an even keel and when financial problems can be resolved. A surprise windfall perhaps as the result of an inheritance, a gift or even a lucky win should go a long way to solving any problems.

When things in your lives seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours in a day are not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar and the 2 cups of coffee.

A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, he wordlessly picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.

The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.

The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with an unanimous "yes."

The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar effectively filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed.

"Now," said the professor as the laughter subsided, "I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important things--your family, your children, your health, your friends and your favorite passions--and if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full.

The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house and your car.

The sand is everything else--the small stuff. "If you put the sand into the jar first," he continued, "there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff you will never have room for the things that are important
to you.

"Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children. Take time to get medical checkups. Take your spouse out to dinner. Play another 18. There will always be time to clean the house and fix the disposal. Take care of the golf balls first--the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand."

One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the coffee represented. The professor smiled. "I'm glad you asked.

It just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem, there's always room for a couple of cups of coffee with a friend."

Geraldine Serina (38), a former Franciscan nun from the Philippines, got married to Maurizio Degortes (33), of Olbia, Sardegna in a civil ceremony last September 2. On the other hand, the religious rite has already been scheduled to take place early next year.

This unusual “love story” started in 2004 through a SMS message of encouragement and moral support that Maurizio addressed to a friend but was accidentally sent by mistake when he misdialed the last number. Sister Geraldine, who was stationed at that time in their convent in Palermo, was having a vocational crisis when she received the message. Somehow, it moved her almost to tears as she read through the following phrases: “Be strong as life is and should not be a tragedy! You’d see that tomorrow will be a better day.” She duly acknowledged it with thanks and gratitude that had made him too happy and contented to what he did. Subsequently, this was followed by a series of messages and later by conversations between them as if they had known each other for years, until the day when she realized that she was in love for the first time!

When Maurizio finally discovered that she was a nun, he was confused and disheartened. Nonetheless, he did all his best to convince her not to renounce her vows because he had felt a strong inner sense of guilt and remorse from the thought of taking away a bride of Christ. For him, such a transgression was neither fair nor possible. Meanwhile, the profound sentiment they have for each other had grown so strong and intense that they couldn’t overcome it anymore.

By the order of her Mother Superior, she had to leave the convent and go back to the Philippines. In the meantime, the parish priest who became her spiritual adviser contacted Maurizio by telephone and talked to him at length about himself and his good intention toward Geraldine. He arranged them to meet at the airport before she was about to board the plane to return home. When they met in January 2005 for the first time, she couldn’t believe how so young he looked like that she thought he could have had been sent by the person with whom she always communicated on the telephone. They exchanged a few words and promised that they would be seeing each other again in Italy in a few months’ time.

What an overwhelming feeling of happiness and excitement to make and see a sad person brighten up with a radiant smile at last! It truly gives him a ray of hope and an immense joy to discover how life is too beautiful and worthwhile to be living for.

On the other hand, the story is not quite the same for everyone else. From experience, I have observed that sensitive and superstitious individuals are so wary and reluctant to have their hands read that I just wonder what could be their personal reason to become too susceptible or touchy to over react in such an aggressive and unpleasant behavior. I have the strong conviction that the outlaying reason to this general sentiment is mostly reflected from their inherent fear and suspicion of receiving bad news or tidings in the form of accident, failure, disease, illness or worse yet, death. Alas, they are only among the most common and natural elements that every mortal would have to go through in life, whether he likes it or not. Yet, I have never dared to tread into any of these somber subjects in any of my readings ever since because it would only traumatize them so much that it would make them too unhappy and despondent to continue any longer to lead a meaningful life. I always try my best to encourage them with words of hope and optimism by painting a brighter picture of their existence no matter how somber and difficult it may appear before my eyes.

It’s a general belief that a short life line is tantamount to mean an early or premature death. On the contrary, I explained to them that such a telltale sign has never been the case with all the older persons whom I’ve met that are still living and enjoying life to the full. However, the break is a rather positive than a negative happening as it would always signify a radical change from the old life to a new and happier one such as academic accomplishments with high honors, job promotion, engagement, marriage, birth, change to or purchase of a new house, move to a bigger city or a foreign country, etc.

In the course of an informal conversation, politics and religion could be too sensitive and delicate arguments to deal with particularly in an intensive debate. On the contrary, I believe any topics on handreading, astrology or other esoteric subjects could be highly interesting and effective even if it were taken for granted especially when we would like to meet and talk to any total strangers for the first time who we might feel a strong affinity to be attracted to and desperately keen to know more about them, personally and intimately. In keeping with the happy atmosphere of the occasion, however, it is my strict personal conviction not to mention or talk about any negative and unpleasant remarks whatsoever even if it were only a joke.

Having ones hands read for fun could be a very positive and wholesome experience, especially when it is done with tact, a lot of good sense of humor and spontaneity. As my own interpretation, tact is the most effective means to make a person feel at ease from the very first eye contact. This could be best conveyed by a pleasant congratulatory remark on the presence of the strong ascending lines that contribute greatly to the person’s success in his pursuit of happiness and self-fulfillment. Once the feeling of suspicion or misapprehension is gradually dissipated, the reading could proceed smoothly with much ease and trust.

With a big smile, I start the reading by a simple and easy-to-follow explanation of the topography of the principal lines while pointing with the tip of the handle of my eyeglasses the positive influences of the rising lines as these would likely mean radical but happy changes and improvements depending on their origin and position in connection to where they are heading or pointing to such as the area of ambition, family, love, marriage, happiness and accomplishments. As I’ve always observed that where the rising lines appear to be too strong and clear to leave heavy marks from an early to a later age, I could say without hesitation that the person is fortunate and contented in his life. As usual, this would always be confirmed when the person is highly satisfied with my findings.

In conclusion, when the overall results of my findings should turn out to be too satisfactory and convincing to meet the trust and esteem of the persons concerned, the rest of the reading could wind up in an outburst of excitement and laughter. A COMPANION AT LAST!

The station was practically deserted before 1:00 a.m. when the taxis had ferried all the remaining passengers to their destinations. I thought I could take refuge inside the station for the night but it was closed immediately after the last train passed through. It would only be opened a few minutes before the first train leaves at 4:41 a.m.

Alas, I had no other choice but to occupy the only bench located at the taxi stop. Somehow I thought that I would be able to lie down and sleep when I could no longer stay awake. Meanwhile, I took a copy of the Italian edition of the Reader’s Digest to pass the time away for I knew it would be a long night before the station opens. Nevertheless, I didn’t feel too apprehensive and lonely to be alone but I couldn’t concentrate on my reading as I had to look around and be on my guard.

Fortunately, it didn’t take too long to see a backpacker to appear from nowhere at such a peculiarly unconventional hour. I had to look at his direction several times to see if he were real or just a mirage as my tired and drooping eyelids could be playing me a dirty trick. If I didn’t pinch my arm and slap my face, I would have easily taken him for the prince charming who could still be on a wild goose chase in search of Cenderella and the 7 dwarfs after the midnight ball. On the contrary, I took it with a certain relief and joy as a blessing in disguise to have somebody around that I could trust and keep me company, just in case.

When he formally presented himself, I almost jumped on my feet to welcome him with arms wide open. But I was too tired and spent to oblige. Instead I offered him my hand to shake his and invited him to occupy the other half of the bench with my famous toothpaste ads smile. Deep in my thought, I could have said: “if you’re looking for troubles, you came to the right place” instead of the usual expression: “make yourself at home!”

He told me that he came with the last train from Verona and that he missed the bus to the youth hostel. His name is Ryan and comes from Los Angeles. He’s on the second leg of his European tour as he already went to Germany, Switzerland, France, Spain and Morocco. He plans to tour Italy before proceeding to Greece and possibly Turkey and then on the Balkan states before catching his plane back home in Frankfurt.

He was too nice to accept my proposition to read his hands. How surprised he was when I recited him a long litany of the many memorable and pleasant moments that he went through as I traced systematically the lines of his hands with the tip of the handle of my eyeglasses. I got him so interested that he even asked me to teach him the basic on the significance of each line. He tried to read mine, but I doubt strongly if he could ever learn it as a beginner in one sitting without any practical exposure to it at all.

From my own experience as a backpacker when I was young, I knew pretty well that he hasn’t eaten a regular decent meal during his trip. So, I took out my doggie bag and offered him the fried rice and egg salad that I prepared earlier for the trip and shared it with him. At first, he hesitated but took some bites until he almost ate the half. I was very happy that he liked and appreciated my cuisine.

Afterwards, I related him how I ended up in Europe. In the course of my narration, he remarked that I shouldn’t make my story short because we had all the time before the station opens. I told him how I got completely pissed off with our highly corrupt political system and my obsession of getting out of the country for good before I’d go banana completely. I told him that thanks to the French Government, I finally made my dream come true that triggered a series of happy events in its wake.

I tried to take a nap on the bench but I was so uncomfortable that I could hardly put myself to sleep immediately. He was too kind to offer me his pillow, but it didn’t help a lot. When the station opened, we rushed to the first platform and occupied a corner where we could be safe to be left alone. As soon as he rolled his sleeping mattress, I just dropped down like a sack of potatoes. How I felt so comfortable on my back that I slept instantly. I woke up to the sweet sound of his snoring some 20 minutes before our departure for Milan. He woke up a few minutes later to buy his ticket at the counter. As the trip would take us an hour, we were too tired to admire the countryside and the landscape and tried to catch up with our sleep.

How I wished that I could have stayed longer with him even for a cup of cappuccino or a light continental breakfast immediately after we arrived in Milan, but I was so in hurry to reach my final destination that I had to catch up another train for a long haul towards the Italian Riviera by the Adriatic. How much I hate such a sad parting! It would only make me cry if I stayed a minute or so. So, I just wished him a pleasant continuation of his trip while I shook his hand tightly and promised to email him as soon as I’m back in Brussels.

CHARLEROI-BERGAMO BY RYANAIR - 9 AUGUST 2006

On August 9, I took the 3:36 p.m. train from Brussels to Charleroi to catch up my return flight to Italy. I met Andras at the station while we waited for the bus that would take us to the airport. He is from Hungary and does research studies in Leuven. He came to fetch a couple of friends.

I made acquaintance with Marco and Andrea from Udine who were waiting for their flight back to Treviso. Before my flight was announced I got into a casual conversation with Stephane and Eric from Valenciennes as they waited for the arrival of their friend from Sweden. I met Mauro from Bergamo while we were standing on line to check in for our flight. After I got my embarkation card, I headed directly to the customs.

The passengers bound for Stockholm were still in the departure when I walked in. I took the opportunity to talk to a member of the basketball team whom I took for an American team because almost half of them were black. I was only too surprised to learn that they were all Swedish nationals. They placed 5^th in an inter-European tournament held in Romania that was won by the Slovenia team. When they left, I met and talked to Emmanuele and his friend from Milano.

I got a wider and more comfortable row located in emergency exit of the plane. I took the window seat, Mauro the middle and Pauline from Lille took the aisle. In the meantime while Mauro and I continued an unfinished business that we started before we were called for embarkation. Somehow, she could overhear our lively and animated conversation with a few giggles and hearty laughs while I traced and explained to him the course of the major lines as well as the significance when they’re overlapped or joined by the corollary lines on their probable effects to any changes and improvements.

From time to time, she would interrupt reading and glanced at us discreetly. When we’re finally through, Mauro was so spontaneous as to propose her if she’d care for a reading. She was rather too keen than curious to oblige. I took her by surprise when she told me how accurate my reading about the trying and difficult period during her teens in coming into terms with her anorexia problem which didn’t affect her brilliant academic performance and success to graduate with honors in high school. On the other hand, I told her not to worry too much about the future because it would bring her great challenges to her career and awesome benefits as well as personal satisfaction.

Afterwards, I told her how much Lille had become the turning point of my life after I left my country for good. My first impression was that it was a gray and cold place because it’s the northern most city of France just a few miles from the Belgian border, but I came to like it during my stay.
